Winthrop hoops getting help from the Midlands

The Winthrop Eagles are currently sitting on top of the Big South standings with a 7-0 league record.

The Winthrop Eagles had quite a challenging non-conference schedule which included a trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium where they lost 83-70 to a Duke team that was ranked first in the country.

But a 6-7 record is now 13-7 after nine consecutive wins, seven in the Big South Conference. The Eagles stayed unbeaten in the league with Thursday night's 79-53 win over USC Upstate.

The Eagles have two Midlands connections on their roster.

Freshman guard Russell Jones, Jr. is a former News19 Player of the Week out of Westwood. Against USC Upstate, Jones had four points from the free throw line along with four assists, five rebounds and three steals.

Another Midlands connection is on the coaching staff where longtime Newberry head basketball coach Dave Davis is in his first season as Winthrop's associate head coach. Davis has been a head coach for 28 seasons, the previous nine at Newberry.
